How Do Infrared Thermometers work?
Infrared thermometers measure temperature without making contact with the object being measured. They achieve this by taking advantage of a phenomenon called black body radiation. Black body radiation is a measure of the vibration of the molecules in an object or substance.
Heat is a function of the movement of molecules, so the temperature of an object is a function of how fast its component molecules are moving. As the molecules move, they emit infrared radiation, which functions much the same as visible light except that our eyes are not equipped to detect it.
